ART INSTALLATION

"Las Ofrendas", October 2022, Paraíso Maravilla, Houston, Tx, Latinas-N-Heels Catrina Couture Fashion Show & Gala

The altars, "las ofrendas", are made with different levels in different areas of Mexico.  No matter how large the altars are, they must include representations of the elements of air, water, fire, and earth. An altar with two steps represents the earth and sky. With three steps, the altar depicts purgatory, earth, and heaven, or the Holy Trinity. The true masterpieces are the altars with seven steps. which represent the steps a soul must take to get to heaven.

It is understood the souls will only take the essence out of the food and drinks so at the end of the celebration or in some places during the event, the family will gather and eat and drink the offered goodies and often share them with the community members.

The “Day of the Dead” has roots in ancient Mayan culture, but it has evolved over the years with Catholicism and colonization. In general, death was viewed as the start of a journey to the kingdom of the dead before reaching heaven. Along the way, the departed would have to offer gifts to complete their journey. Over the years, Catholic crosses and religious symbols were incorporated. Regardless of religious beliefs, however, the altar continues to be a way to appreciate and celebrate the life of loved ones who have departed this earth.

Anyone can relate to the concept of respecting one’s ancestors, and that’s why anyone can celebrate Day of the Dead.
